The Bathurst District War Memorial Carillon and the Community Bells in the Bathurst Anglican Cathedral will lead the way as 2021 ticks over into 2022 and bells around the world ring in celebration.

The ‘Ring around the World’ global initiative was created by Paul Ashe, President of the National Bells Festival in the USA and Stuart Pearson, convenor of Bathurst’s own ‘Festival of Bells’. This unique event, the first of its kind in the world, will see the Anglican Cathedral ring out its bells up to midnight with the Carillon then striking 12 strokes of the bell followed by 15 minutes of music commencing with the traditional Scottish song ‘Auld Lang Syne’.

Manager Tourism and Visitor Service Daniel Cove said Bathurst is the only location in the world where a carillon, with its fixed bells, is located next to a cathedral, with its own separate set of pealing bells.

“The Anglican Cathedral Bell ringers will start off this global event prior to midnight during which Denise Garland, one of Bathurst’s very own carillonists, will climb the stairs to the top of the Carillon to be ready to commence on the stroke of midnight. The Bathurst District War Memorial Carillon will be the very first to ring in the New Year with a number of Carillons to follow in Africa, Europe and North America as the world moves through its different time zones. The whole event will be streamed live on YouTube, commencing with the Bathurst Carillon.”

“This initiative puts Bathurst on the global stage, alongside bells in many world cities, such as Johannesburg, Oslo, Copenhagen, London, and Washington, and further highlights the importance and deep cultural significance of the Bathurst District War Memorial Carillon,” Mr Cove said.

The Bathurst Cycling Classic for 2022 will not be going ahead due to the uncertainty around Covid-19 and an increase in similar cycling events in NSW.

Event Manager Amanda Marks said the event has seen a drop in numbers in recent years.

“With increased competition and with the uncertainty around Covid-19, Council has made the decision not to proceed.”

Council has invited Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the redevelopment of the former TAFE Precinct.

The precinct will be a once in a generation opportunity for the Bathurst region. The precinct will include a new public plaza and new buildings, adaptive reuse of the former TAFE and headmaster’s buildings. It is informed by previous community consultation and conservation management plans.

Council is seeking development interest in the precinct with private (not Council) funding. Private funding allows for the full precinct to be developed, it also allows money from the development of new private buildings to fund the new ‘plaza’ and the adaptive reuse of the heritage buildings.

Concept Playground Designs – Gormans Hill And Miller Parks

These enhancement projects will ensure enjoyment and participation in play for all users, regardless of their age, ability or background.

Concept designs for the two play spaces, which include a range of new play and

natural elements to improve inclusivity in line with the NSW Government’s Everyone Can Play Guidelines. Council is now seeking input from the community on the concept designs that have been developed for Miller and Gormans Hill Parks.

Feedback closes Friday 14 January.

Participants need to identify 12 different Christmas decorations located in shop fronts. Correct entries will go into a draw for a chance to win one of eight vouchers including Annie’s Ice Cream and Metro Cinema. Show the best and brightest colours for a chance to win a Supercars-themed lunch cooler. Download a copy from Council’s website or pick up a printed version from one of the businesses participating in the window display competition from Monday, 22 November. Entries must be emailed to events@bathurst.nsw.gov.au by 4pm Sunday 5 December to be in the running. Winners will be announced on Tuesday, 7 December. Presentation of Financial Statements

Council advises that the Ordinary Council meeting to be held on 17 November 2021 will include the presentation of the audited Financial Statements and the Auditor’s Reports for the year ending 30 June 2021. Closes 2 December.

EOI Former TAFE Precinct

Council has invited Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the redevelopment of the former TAFE Precinct.

The precinct will be a once in a generation opportunity for the Bathurst region. The precinct will include a new public plaza and new buildings, adaptive reuse of the former TAFE and headmaster’s buildings. It is informed by previous community consultation and conservation management plans.

Council is seeking development interest in the precinct with private (not Council) funding. Private funding allows for the full precinct to be developed, it also allows money from the development of new private buildings to fund the new ‘plaza’ and the adaptive reuse of the Heritage Buildings.

This year’s Bathurst 1000 winner presentation will be a ticketed event to be drawn by ballot.

2020 champions, Shane Van Gisbergen and Garth Tander, will be presented their plaque and deliver an all-new Q and A session.

Events Manager Amanda Marks said the event will proceed in this format to control crowds and keep the event Covid safe.

“The winner presentation is usually a popular event that draws thousands of residents and visitors to Kings Parade,” she said.

“We have to follow NSW Health advice and apply the 1 person per 2 square metre rule and can only allow fully vaccinated people. Kids under twelve can attend but must be accompanied by a fully vaccinated adult.”

The ballot is available now at www.bathurst.nsw.gov.au/events and will be drawn on Thursday, 25 November. Each entry drawn will receive two tickets.

Legends at the Museum

Saturday Street Fair

The Saturday Street Fair returns and it has something for everyone. Wander through the market stalls in Kings Parade, listen to live music from talented local artists, and enjoy some of the best local food. There’s plenty for the kids too with $5 show rides and free activities.

Colouring-in competition

All primary school-aged children are invited to take part in this year’s Repco Bathurst 1000 colouring-in competition. Show the best and brightest colours for a chance to win a family pass to the Repco Bathurst 1000 and a Supercars stationary pack. Download a copy from Council’s website or pick up a printed version from one of the businesses participating in the window display competition from Monday, 22 November. Entries must be emailed to events@bathurst.nsw.gov.au by 4pm Sunday 5 December to be in the running. Winners will be announced on Tuesday, 7 December. The competition is open to anyone aged 0 – 12 years old.

SES Central West Capability Unit

Do you have good IT, admin and communication skills, able to work unsupervised and would like to contribute to managing incidents with other dedicated volunteers. The unit provides specialist operators to support incident management throughout the region or across the State. Each member of the unit receives specialist training in incident management. The community JP Desk in the Bathurst City Centre is open to assist clients face to face who need JP services.

Since August, Council’s Rangers have taken an educative approach to parking enforcement, issuing cautions for many offences rather than Penalty Infringement Notices (PINs).

Director Environmental, Planning and Building Services Neil Southorn said Council had taken this approach to enforcement to support the local businesses and the community during the difficult period over the last few months.

“The focus of enforcement activities was on issues that represented a genuine safety risk such as parking in no stopping zones or in bus zones near schools and use of disabled parking space without authorisation that have received PINs,” he said.

Council Rangers will begin to escalate enforcement practice to ensure fair and equitable access to parking for all members of the community in the lead up to the Christmas shopping period. This will include restrictions in school zones, bus zones, no parking areas and time restrictions in the carparks.
