Tender awarded for Bathurst Town Centre Master Plan

The tender for the preparation of the Bathurst Town Centre Master Plan has been awarded to Allen Jack + Cottier Architects Pty Ltd.
In September, Council and Charles Sturt University entered discussions to formulate a plan to incorporate a new campus in the Bathurst CBD.
Mayor Bobby Bourke said the aim of the plan was to strengthen the Bathurst Town Centre as the regional business and cultural hub of the city in an era of significant retail change.
“I am thrilled to work with Charles Sturt University and commend the organisation on its commitment to Bathurst in investigating innovative responses to a changing market,” he said.
Director of External Engagement at Charles Sturt University Julia Andrews said thinking innovatively about how the University can contribute to the long-term social and economic vision of Bathurst is an important aspect of our University Strategy.
“The appointment of the consultant is an important milestone in the vision for Bathurst and we look forward to working with them and the community as the project progresses,” she said.
The plan also aims to:
· Position Bathurst as an education hub through Charles Sturt University’s strategic goal to create a new era campus embedded in the city centre in response to the need for a revised business model for higher education in Bathurst and thus attract greater inward migration into the region;
· Find a suitable adaptive reuse of the former Bathurst TAFE site located within the Bathurst Town Square at the heart of the Bathurst Town Centre;
· Identify other key development opportunities in the Town Centre creating linkages between them and stimulating new levels of activity; and
· Complement the heritage character of the Town Centre and Bathurst, which identifies as Australia’s oldest inland settlement.

A tribe of cancer curing cyclists and an organisation that provides the sheer freedom and joy of cycling to Australians with disabilities have been announced as the official charities for the 2020 Bathurst Cycling Classic. Freedom Wheels and Tour de Cure are the inaugural official charities for the event.
The 2020 edition of the Bathurst Cycling Classic is a year of many firsts, such as a new looped course for the B2B. The Bathurst Cycling Classic was originally run by local charity Rotary, which is still heavily involved in the event.
Mayor Bobby Bourke said Council is very proud to appoint two amazing charities who do incredible work in the community and are an active part of cycling culture.
“Events like the Bathurst Cycling Classic have the opportunity to make a significant impact on people’s lives. To be able to support charities that put a smile on the face of young children in need as well as take on the cancer battle with Tour de Cure is an honour and we look forward to working with Freedom Wheels and Tour de Cure to support their work and fundraising,” he said.
“We ask all of our cyclists to consider raising funds for these cycling-inspired charities via their participation in the 2020 Bathurst Cycling Classic.”
The Bathurst Cycling Classic has partnered with Go Fundraise to create a dedicated Bathurst Cycling Classic website and all 2020 Bathurst Cycling Classic participants can create a personal fundraising page and raise vital funds for charity partners.
The 2020 Bathurst Cycling Classic is to be held on March 14-15, next year. Participants can register at www.bathurstcyclingclassic.com.au and create their own fundraising page to raise funds for Freedom Wheels or Tour de Cure at https://bathurstcyclingclassic2020.gofundraise.com.au/
Freedom Wheelshttps://freedomwheels.org.au/ are custom bikes for kids and adults living with a disability who cannot ride a standard bike. The team of skilled staff and volunteers design, build and deliver the bikes to suit the physical and cognitive needs of the individual so they too can enjoy what cycling has to offer.
“Freedom Wheels are thrilled to be an official charity partner for the Bathurst Cycling Classic,” said Meadhbh Roche, Promotions Coordinator at Freedom Wheels.
“For many kids living with a disability, cycling is a dream which sometimes seems impossible. The fundraising by participants in the Bathurst Cycling Classic will go towards making these dreams come true for some of our kids, of which we currently have 105 on a waiting list.”
The dream of Tour de Cure https://www.tourdecure.com.au/ is a world without cancer. Tour de Cure brings together ordinary people from across Australia to raise funds for cancer research via cycling tours events. These events raise vital funds for world-class cancer projects that make the biggest impact on this terrible disease.
“Tour de Cure (TdC) are excited to partner with the Bathurst Cycling Classic. We're a passionate community committed to curing cancer and encouraging all Australians to live a healthy, cancer smart lifestyle. We know that 1 IN 3 Cancers are preventable and by riding in the BCC you're on the right path to keeping fit, healthy & happy,’ said Geoff Coombes, Tour de Cure Co-Founder.
“We fund brilliant scientists doing ground-breaking research that will impact cancer outcomes in our life time. With the help of Bathurst Cycling Classic participant fundraising we can fund a key Immunotherapy research project at the Garvan Institute that will improve survival rates and quality of life. The BCC is a great event showcasing cycling over a two-day festival and we encourage you to get involved and come and say hi."

LED light upgrades to rollout in Bathurst
Share LED light upgrades to rollout in Bathurst on Facebook Share LED light upgrades to rollout in Bathurst on Twitter Share LED light upgrades to rollout in Bathurst on Linkedin Email LED light upgrades to rollout in Bathurst linkMEDIA RELEASE 28 November 2019
Work to upgrade more than 5600 of the city’s street lights to energy efficient technology will begin this week as part of a major energy efficiency project that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help save on the cost of electricity.
Bathurst Regional Council is part of the Southern Lights NSW project which will see over 75,000 LED street lights deployed in 41 Local Government Areas across southern NSW from Bega to Broken Hill.
The switch to LED technology in Bathurst will see a 1900 MWh reduction per year in power use for street lighting, delivering savings of greater than $550,000 each year in maintenance and electricity costs.
Mayor Bobby Bourke said Council was committed to becoming more sustainable and the LED upgrade is just one initiative in Council’s strategies to achieve energy and operational efficiencies.
“Streetlighting is a significant expense for Council, costing around $1.2 million in 2018/19 FY, and with around 6500 streetlights across Council’s footprint, the upgrade will go a long way to reducing costs and providing significant long-term savings,” said Mayor Bourke.
“LEDs are far more energy efficient, require less maintenance and have a significantly longer life.”
“Council is investing $2.17 million to complete the bulk upgrade, with the costs expected to be recouped within four years.”
Essential Energy streetlight manager Waide Elliott said the organisation continues to work closely with Councils across its distribution area and is committed to providing information and services that are appropriate to Councils’ needs and those of the communities they serve.
“Essential Energy is responsible for the maintenance and billing of more than 160,000 streetlights serving more than 86 councils across New South Wales and parts of Southern Queensland,” Mr Elliott said.
“Public lighting plays an important role in providing safe, secure and attractive public areas for both pedestrians and motorists. It also represents between 25 and 70 per cent of any individual local government’s corporate energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
“The new LED streetlighting in Bathurst will not only provide a more reliable, better quality lighting service, but will deliver savings of more than 60% per cent in energy consumption.
“This type of light also provides future potential for other ‘smart’ applications to be added and will allow Essential Energy to more effectively manage the streetlight network and respond more promptly to potential outages,” Mr Elliott said.
