National Asbestos Awareness Week

National Asbestos Awareness Week reminds Australians to be asbestos aware before they start any work around the home. Asbestos materials are still commonly found in bathrooms, laundries, and kitchens as well as behind tiles and under flooring. The campaign is calling on Australians to know the health risks, be aware of where asbestos might be found before starting work and to call a professional for help.

New Special Exhibition - Dick Johnson Racing 40th Anniversary

In October 1980, a rock on the track at Mount Panorama would propel a struggling Queensland racer to national prominence, and kickstart a remarkable career at the very top of Australian Touring Car racing. With three Bathurst 1000 victories and five Australian Touring Car Titles, Dick Johnson would become a household name, and Ford’s leading light through the 1980s and 1990s.The latest Special Exhibition at the National Motor Racing Museum charts the rise of Dick Johnson through his early years as an amateur racer in Queensland, through the glory days of the 1980s and 90s, and the ongoing successes of Dick Johnson Racing, and DJR Team Penske. The Museum is open from 9am to 4:30pm daily, closed on Tuesdays.

A red alert warning has been issued for blue-green algae at Chifley Dam, which is now closed to all recreational activities as of 4 November. The town water supply remains safe to drink. Council will continue to monitor the dam algae levels.

Presentation of Financial Statements

In accordance with Section 418 (3) of the Local Government Act 1993 (NSW), Bathurst Regional Council advises that the ordinary Council meeting to be held on 18 November 2020 will include the presentation of the audited Financial Statements and the Auditor’s Reports for the year ending 30 June 2020. The outdoor recreational space at the Kelso Community Hub has won a second design award, this time receiving national recognition at the 2020 Kidsafe National Playspace Design Awards.

The Kidsafe National Playspace Design awards are held every two years to recognise excellence and innovation in the provision of safe, creative playspaces across Australia.

The Kelso Community Hub received a ‘commended award’ in the public play spaces

Mayor Bobby Bourke congratulated all those involved in the project.

“Designed by Fiona Robbe from Landscape Architects and constructed by Tablelands Builders, the space includes slides, swings, monkey bars and an accessible spinner,” he said.

“The new recreational space is incredibly popular with the community and is a valuable addition to the Kelso Community Hub which provides a range of services and facilities in the community.”

The Bathurst Cycling Classic, to be held 12 – 14 March 2021 will see the introduction of the Bathurst Tour, a competitive event which offers a combined entry for the Hill Climb, Criterium and B2B (Bathurst to Bathurst) 100km road race.

Participants will accrue points relevant to their performance in each of the disciplines with prizes valued at over $15,000 up for grabs over the duration of the event.

Mayor Bobby Bourke said the Bathurst Cycling Classic includes three days of cycling action, with the hill climb being held for the first time on Mount Panorama starting from Pit Straight to McPhillamy Park.

“The Criterium will be held on Saturday 13 March and the B2B on Sunday 14 March, with only the long (100km) course being offered for next year’s event which will start in the Bathurst CBD. Long course participants will complete a lap of Mount Panorama before heading out to the course. The 2021 event is not UCI sanctioned.

“The Bathurst Cycling Classic 2021 will be a COVID safe event adhering to the NSW Health guidelines. The event will be reduced capacity, no spectators and additional COVID safe practices to ensure the health and safety of all participants, staff, visitors, and residents.

• The Bathurst Tour entry (entry to the three events) is $295 per person
• The B2B 100km is $225 per person
• The Hill Climb is $45 per person

The Criterium will not be able to be purchased individually, only as part of the Bathurst Tour.

Tickets for valued supporters go on sale Monday 9 November at 12pm with general public tickets going on sale Tuesday 10 November at 12pm. Tickets are limited to adhere to reduced capacity and can be purchased from www.bathurstcyclingclassic.com.au.

Mayor of Bathurst Bobby Bourke has welcomed the 14 members of the 2020/21 Youth Council into their role.

The new Youth Council met for the first time this week and elected Bathurst High student Zoe Peters Youth Mayor and St Stanislaus College student Joshua Borland as Youth Deputy Mayor.

Mayor Bourke congratulated the incoming Youth Council members.

“The Youth Council plays an important role in our community and within Council and I congratulate all those who were selected to serve on Youth Council for this current term.

“I look forward to seeing what you achieve as a group and attending the many events and activities you get involved in during this term.”

Community Animal Welfare Scheme

Council in partnership with the RSPCA is pleased to announce that the next community animal welfare scheme will commence on Monday 16 November. This scheme is only open to pensioners, newstart or jobseeker recipients and healthcare card holders who are residents of the Bathurst Local Government Area.

The subsidized cost for this program is as follows: Dog Female $70.00 Male $55.00 Cat Female $55.00 Male $40.00 The cost of microchipping is included for both dogs and cats. First vaccinations are included for both cats and dogs. Pain relief and hospitalization are included in the cost for both dogs and cats. A draft landscape plan for Sawpit Creek Open Space Reserve featuring an extension to the Kath Knowles pathway and providing connections to proposed and existing pathway networks within future subdivisions is now on display.

Sawpit Creek Open Space Reserve runs north to south between Ophir Road and the Mitchell Highway adjacent to the suburbs of Llanarth and Windradyne.

Mayor Bobby Bourke said the plan details a proposal to provide pedestrian links and new park and recreation facilities, whilst enhancing and protecting our natural vegetation corridors.

“The design includes designated spaces for passive and active use, with park seating, shelters, formal playgrounds, nature pathways and native vegetation plantings for our community to enjoy Sawpit Creek, he said.

“Additionally, the proposed planting scheme will enhance the existing streetscape interfaces and contribute to the rehabilitation of the Sawpit Creek riparian corridor, and critically endangered Box-Gum Grassy Woodland ecological community.”

The proposed plan includes a designated open space area that features a central irrigated grass recreation area, picnic facilities including shelters and seating, and playground equipment.

The draft plan and associated documents are on display on the YourSay Bathurst website and the community is invited to comment and provide feedback at yoursay.bathurst.nsw.gov.au or via written submission to The General Manager, Bathurst Regional Council, 158 Russell Street or PMB 17 Bathurst, NSW 2795.

Feedback will close on Friday 4 December 2020 at 4.00pm.

Bathurst’s NAIDOC Week celebrations will go online this year with a video of the flag raising ceremony and interviews featuring local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life.

Mayor Bobby Bourke said the theme this year is Always Was, Always Will Be which recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.

“NAIDOC week invites all Australians to embrace the history of this country - a history which dates back thousands of generations,” he said.

The video will go live on Council’s Facebook page on Monday 9 November at 9.30am.

Women in Local Government information session

An information session for women interested in standing as a candidate for the 2021 local government election will be held on Tuesday 17 November 2020. The session will from 5.30pm – 7.30pm in the Council Chambers. Due to COVID-19 restrictions numbers are limited. Participants must register to attend. Registration is via email to csrecep@bathurst.nsw.gov.au and you need to include your name and contact details. If you are unable to register via email call Council on 6333 6111.

YourSay Asset Management Plans

Council has prepared draft Asset Management Plans for Aerodrome, Bridges, Buildings, Drainage, Footpaths, Parks and Recreation, Rural Roads, Sewer, Solid Waste, Urban

Roads and Water, which are on exhibition for community feedback.

Hard copies of the draft plans are available for viewing at the Council’s Engineering Services

Department or can be downloaded from the YourSay Bathurst website, yoursay.bathurst.nsw.

New parks for the community

The construction of new parks within the Marsden Heights subdivision area in Kelso will commence soon, with final arrangements being made with contractors that will be involved in the project.

Three reserves located within Mendel, Coates and Keane Drives will undergo embellishment works to transform the open space sites to usable parklands for residents.

The project will see the installation of inclusive playground equipment, fitness stations, a multipurpose active sports court, picnic shelters, seating, a footpath network, landscaping and tree planting.

Mayor Bobby Bourke said the works were possible thanks in part to the Federal Government’s Drought Communities Program.

“The project will be funded with $150,000 from Council and a grant of $150,000 from the Federal Government,” he said.

“The project will provide our community with more wonderful spaces to get together, play, relax and spend time outdoors.”

On site works are expected commence within the coming months.
