Council secures deal for 100 per cent renewable energy for facilities

Council has secured a contract for renewable electricity to power large sites and streetlighting by combining with ten other councils from the central NSW region and five councils from the riverina region in a joint procurement process.
Coordinated by Central NSW Joint Organisation, Council has entered into a Renewable Electricity Supply Agreement with Iberdrola (Australia) P/L to supply 100 per cent renewable electricity until 2030. The 100 per cent renewables will come from electricity supplied from the Bodangara Wind Farm near Wellington NSW, and the retirement of Large-Scale Generation Certificates associated with that project. There will be an option to change to the Flyers Creek Wind Farm, another Iberdrola project under construction near Blayney, when it becomes operational.
Mayor Robert Taylor said the contract will commence next year and will achieve zero emissions electricity for large sites and streetlights from the contract start date.
“This agreement has many advantages for Council and our community. It secures a clean energy supply for Council operations, supports investment in renewables in the central west, reduces Council’s reliance on fossil fuels, and importantly protects us from increasing price volatility in the electricity market,” he said.
Iberdrola Australia Managing Director and CEO, Ross Rolfe AO said we are delighted to be partnering with Councils in the central NSW and riverina regions, enabling them to access reliable and affordable clean energy backed by our wind farms and flexible, fast-start assets.
“We have worked with the Councils and communities in these regions for many years and we are very pleased to be deepening our partnership with them. These Councils have supported not only our strategy but also the Australian economy’s green energy transition,” he said.
“Looking ahead, we see many further opportunities to collaborate with our partners to create shared value for our stakeholders in regional NSW”.
Central NSW Joint Organisation Chair, Cr Kevin Beatty said the buying power of 16 councils from the central NSW and riverina regions with a total combined electricity consumption of 36GWh per year is substantial. Collectively, the Central NSW region will source around 78% of its electricity for Councils’ large sites and streetlighting from renewable energy under this deal. This is a huge win for the region” he said.
Signing of the renewable electricity contract will see Council exceed the renewable electricity targets of the Renewable Energy Action Plan which was adopted in 2020. Alongside Council’s continued work to improve energy efficiency and install more solar at its sites, this agreement will help Council reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by around 7,500 tonnes of CO2e annually.

Bathurst Regional Council has joined Charles Sturt University in unveiling a new look and a new location for Council’s popular Careers Expo.
The event, which has been running as the Bathurst Jobs Expo since 2014, is now the Bathurst Careers Expo and will be held at the Charles Sturt University campus next month, on Tuesday 9 August.
Mayor Robert Taylor said the expo is a popular event that attracts hundreds of students and job keepers from across the region.
“The Expo is a central point for students and job keepers to meet with a range of education providers, local employers and government agencies in one location.
“To date we already have more than 50 registered stallholders and we expect this number to grow giving visitors to the expo a broad range of information and career opportunities to explore.”
“This year, it will also give the students a chance to get to know more about the Charles Sturt University campus and open up the range of study options available to them at our own local university,” Cr Taylor said.
Charles Sturt Vice-Chancellor, Professor Renée Leon welcomed the opportunity to host the Bathurst Careers Expo at the University.
“This is the first year the event will be held on university grounds, within the Charles Sturt Bathurst gymnasium, which will facilitate an increased number of stalls and attendees with the larger space,” Professor Leon said.
Charles Sturt representatives will be available to speak about courses, campuses and the Charles Sturt Advantage early admissions program.
Professor Leon said staff from IBM Australia would also be in attendance to offer further insights into the partnership with the University.
“Our partnership with IBM Australia will open doors for those seeking a career in the IT sector through internships and job opportunities thereafter,” Professor Leon said.
“The Charles Sturt team at the expo will be able to offer expert advice on course options across all of our schools, including allied health, engineering, education and business.
“We are looking forward to working with Bathurst Regional Council and the local community to deliver this important event and welcome all job-seekers and employers to our Bathurst campus.”
The Bathurst Careers Expo will be held on Tuesday 9 August 2022 at the Charles Sturt University gymnasium between 9am and 3pm.

The community is invited to a workshop to help develop the Bathurst Illegal Dumping Action Plan and build on the success of recent campaigns to curb illegal dumping activities across the local government area.
Council has been working with the NSW Environmental Protection Authority through the Partnerships for Prevention grant program to combat illegal dumping across the LGA.
Mayor Cr Robert Taylor said illegal dumping incidents spiked during the COVID lockdowns in 2020-21 with approximately 250 dumping incidents in an 18 month period, a 156% increase compared to previous year.
“To help combat this illegal dumping trend Council has deployed several mobile illegal dumping monitoring cameras at hotspots across the region and implemented a community focused communication strategy. This has included educational social media campaigns, advertising in print and radio media, installation of informative signage and participatory workshops.
“The campaign is working. We have seen a drop in illegal dumping incidents, they are down by 47% in 2022. This is encouraging, but there is more to be done.
“We encourage the community to continue to report illegal dumping activity and to come along to the community workshop planned for Wednesday 27 July.

“The program for this year is extensive featuring food and wine stalls, festival nights and plenty of activities for families with children.
“From sundown to 10pm each night the popular illuminations will be displayed on buildings around the CBD”.
Regional tourism expert from the Charles Sturt University School of Business, Dr Clifford Lewis said research has shown that events bring the community together and help instil pride in the town.
“They provide an opportunity for residents to invite others to come visit, and with that be an ambassador for the area. In doing so, it facilitates a sense of place attachment helping to keep residents, while also works to market the town to new potential residents,” he said.
“Events like the Bathurst Winter Festival also help showcase the place. The food and wine stalls in particular, allow local residents and small businesses to put their work on display.”
