Reflect, respect and celebrate Australia Day with a variety of events across the region.
Mayor Robert Taylor said it’s a day to celebrate all the things that we love about Australia.
“There are several activities occurring around the city and the villages for our community to enjoy including a citizenship ceremony, barbecues, movie memorabilia exhibition and the popular free entry to Manning Aquatic Centre,” he said.
"We will induct 51 new citizens from nations around the world including Nepal, South Africa, United State of America, Philippines, Ireland, Pakistan, Vietnam, New Zealand, India, Netherlands, Chile, Ukraine and Malawi. It is such a special occasion as we officially welcome our newest citizens to our local community, and also as Australians."
“We also have the honour of multi award winning innovator, social entrepreneur and founder of Good360 Australia, Alison Covington as the Australia Day Ambassador.”
Good360 is a matchmaker, repurposing items of value by giving them a ‘first life’ with nothing left unused and directing them to Australians in need via Australia’s largest online marketplace matching surplus to need.
Since 2015, Alison has been responsible for businesses donating $300M+ of goods, including BIG W, Harvey Norman, LEGO and Colgate and matching 33+ million items to 3500+ charities and schools.
The program this year will feature the Australian Movie Memorabilia Exhibition courtesy of local retiree Noel Cowan. The display will be held at BMEC from 9.30am until 12.30pm and includes items such as original souvenir movie programs, posters, and cinema programs.

Works on Water Harvesting continue
Share Works on Water Harvesting continue on Facebook Share Works on Water Harvesting continue on Twitter Share Works on Water Harvesting continue on Linkedin Email Works on Water Harvesting continue linkMEDIA RELEASE 13 January 2023
Construction has commenced on the water harvesting project to bolster the city’s water supply.
The project will build a 36ML storage pond off Morrisset Street and 8ML storage pond at the Water Treatment Plant to capture water run-off from drains and local catchments. Once it is harvested and collected, the water will be pumped to the water treatment plant for filtration so that it is safe to use.
Mayor Robert Taylor said the project will help secure water supplies for the city into the future.
“Water harvesting will secure yield of approximately 1,500 ML per annum. During the drought, this amount of water represents approximately one third of Bathurst’s water needs while on restrictions,” he said.
Works commenced late last year and the next stage of the works will have some impact on parks, reserves and streets.
Site preparations, including site fencing and installation of sediment controls, are progressing along the Macquarie River adjacent to the riverwalk (on the Kelso side of the river), and on Monday 23 January, works are expected to commence on this site.
Works will be contained within a smaller site compound where possible, but will limit access along the walkway in some areas where the works are restricted by narrow access point and where required by necessity for the protection of signficant trees in the area. A site compound will also be established on River Road for the duration of the works in this area.
Following completion of works in the riverwalk vicinity, works will progress along the river towards Gormans Hill.
The Water Harvesting project is a $21 million project. The NSW Government has provided $20million to Council for water security projects including the Water Harvesting and the Winburndale pipeline projects.
Updates on the project are available on the YourSay Bathurst website.

Businesses invited to celebrate World Athletics Cross Country
To build excitement and celebrate the countdown to the arrival of World Athletics Cross Country Championships to Bathurst, businesses are encouraged to adopt a country and dress their window in the theme of the adopted nation.
The World Athletics Cross Country Championships will take place 17-19 February at Mount Panorama with more than 500 athletes from 68 countries.
Mayor Robert Taylor said this initiative will help boost excitement for this large and prestigious event and to also build awareness within the community.
“Local businesses have done some fantastic displays for our city’s other events and I am always impressed with the creativity and thought put into the window displays by many of our local businesses,” he said.
“If your business has not participated in the past, I encourage you to take part and not only increase the chance of drawing more customers to your organisation, but to also be in the draw to win some great prizes for your business.”
There are cash prizes available for best dressed window display with first prize at $5000, second prize at $3,500 and third at $2000.
Dining venues are also encouraged to register for the opportunity to host live music with an international flavour at their venues while the championships are held.
This initiative is fully funded by WXC and Destination NSW.

Share Council goes 100 per cent renewable energy on Facebook Share Council goes 100 per cent renewable energy on Twitter Share Council goes 100 per cent renewable energy on Linkedin Email Council goes 100 per cent renewable energy linkMedia Release 28 December 2022
On 1 January 2023 all of Council’s facilities will be powered by 100 per cent renewable electricity.
In August Council secured a contract for renewable electricity to power large sites and streetlighting by combining with ten other councils from the central NSW region and five councils from the Riverina region in a joint procurement process. The contract commences on 1 January 2023 with electricity sourced from the Bodangara wind farm near Wellington, as well as other renewable energy assets owned by Iberdrola.
In October this year, Council also contracted to source 100 per cent renewable energy for all its small market electricity sites through Shell Energy.
Together the contracts will achieve zero emissions electricity for all of Council’s facilities and streetlights, reducing emissions from Council operations by around 10,000 tonnes annually.
Mayor Robert Taylor said this will reduce Council’s carbon footprint by providing clean energy supply for Council operations.
“The deal also supports investments in renewables, reduces reliance on fossil fuels and protects from the price volatility in the electricity market,” he said.
“The contracts mean Council will exceed the renewable energy targets adopted in June 2020 as part of the Renewable Energy Action Plan, and will also go a long way to helping Council achieve the target of 25 per cent reduction in operational greenhouse gas emissions by 2025.”

The Bathurst region is a treasure trove of hidden gems and well-known attractions this summer. Come and uncover yours. This is what Bathurst region locals are being encouraged to do during their summer holidays, sharing the love of our fantastic region with visiting friends and relatives.
The promotion, run by Bathurst Visitor Information Centre, includes a weekly draw until the end of summer with prizes including gift vouchers for local activities and attractions, food, and retail all available. To become involved, residents and visitors of the Bathurst region are encouraged to snap their unearthed hidden gems, tag the locations, and share on social media using the hashtag #BXmarksthespot for others to discover as well.
Manager of Tourism and Visitor Services, Dan Cove said the promotion is a fun way for locals and visitors to support businesses in the visitor economy during the holiday period.
‘BX is a widely known, shorthand term for Bathurst used colloquially by many residents, which stems from military radio communications during the Second World War. By using BX, a local term to instil pride in our residents, and turning the region into a giant treasure hunt, encouraging them to share their experiences with the Visiting Friends and Relative (VFR) market over summer, we are aiming to increase overall awareness and consideration of our local businesses, experiences, and attractions.’
‘There is something for everyone in the Bathurst region this summer from the great outdoors to our rich heritage and history, well-loved attractions, foodie finds, events and live music, great local shops, art and culture. It’s all here to be found’
The BX Marks the Spot treasure hunt competition will be launched the week after Christmas. From Monday, 26 December, participants are encouraged to start hunting for those local treasures and sharing them. Winners will be drawn on the following Sunday and contacted directly by Bathurst Visitor Information Centre with instructions on how to redeem their prizes.
