    MEDIA RELEASE 17 March 2023

Waste 2 Art is an annual community art competition and exhibition that celebrates the reuse and recycling of waste through arts and crafts.

The initiative is taking on a different form this year by being held in conjunction with the Sustainable Living Expo at the showground.

Mayor Robert Taylor said it is envisaged that the new venue and timing will help the Waste 2 Art message reach a broader audience and to those who have not engaged with Waste 2 Art before.

“The theme is Year of Textiles and it has sparked innovative ways for the community to re-purpose old textile items into new life as artworks. This has especially been seen in workshops undertaken at GoodStart Early Learning Centre, Kelso, Rockley Public School and Wattle Flat Public School,” he said.

Workshops were held with children aged from 3 to 12 years creating cuddle cushions, bags, and wall hangings out of their preloved clothes. All children were upskilled in being taught to thread a needle and basic hand stitching, while learning about sustainable fashion and the harms of over consumption and textile waste in landfill.

There is still time to enter the competition, with entries closing on Monday, 20 March and artworks can be delivered to the Cec English Pavilion, Bathurst Showground, Kendall Avenue between 9am-4pm.

Visit Bathurst Regional Council’s website or phone the Waste 2 Art co-ordinator on 6333 6100 for more information.
