Youth Council Recruitment

Applications are now open for young people aged from 15 - 18 years to join the Bathurst Regional Youth Council.

The Youth Council provides opportunities to participate in the community by organising events, having a say on local issues and working on projects that support and encourage young people.

Macquarie View Tennis Clubhouse

Council is seeking information on the Macquarie View Tennis Clubhouse, Esrom Street West Bathurst, specifically when the club was first established and details on its founding members.

Council is currently refurbishing the tennis clubhouse and as part of the project a Heritage Interpretation Plan is being prepared to guide how the site will be interpreted. This document will also be important in recording details on the history of the clubhouse.

The Delivery Program & Operational Plan, incorporating the Revenue Policy, outlines the strategies and financial resources required over the next four years to implement the key directions identified by the community in our Bathurst 2040 Community Strategic Plan.

The draft plan is now open for public submissions and can be viewed at: yoursay.bathurst.nsw.gov.au, at the Civic Centre or at the library.

Submissions are invited until 4:45pm on Friday 20 May, and will be considered at the Council meeting in June.

Council has prepared a Draft Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) 2022 - 2027, which is on exhibition for community feedback. Hard copies of the draft plan are available for viewing at the Civic Centre and Bathurst Library or from the YourSay Bathurst website.

Submissions can be lodged via YourSay Bathurst or in writing to The General Manager, Private Mail Bag 17, Bathurst, NSW, 2795. Submissions can be made until 4pm Friday 27 May.

National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is held annually from 27 May - 3 June. NRW is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

The NRW 2022 theme "Be Brave. Make Change." calls for all Australians to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for the benefit of all Australians.

Council will mark NRW 2022 by hosting a free, family fun football afternoon at Kelso Community Hub on Friday 27 May 2022 from 3:30pm – 5:30pm.

The event will include:

• Football activities facilitated by local league clubs
• Traditional Indigenous Games facilitated by Bathurst Junior Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG)
• Library Van visit – Book borrowing and children’s activities
• Catering by Indigenous Cultural Adventures
• Informal touch football match for children, youth, community members, service providers and local football role models

• The Bathurst Region Local Heritage Fund provides small grants for the repair and maintenance of older buildings in the region. The program is supported by the NSW Heritage Branch of the Office of Environment and Heritage.
• The Bathurst CBD Main Street Improvement Fund provides small grants to assist property owners and tenants to activate, improve, repair and maintain buildings within the central business district.
• The Bathurst Region Interpretation Fund provides small grants for the preparation of Conservation Management

Plans, historic publications and interpretation projects to promote and interpret the region’s history.

Applications for funding must be made on the application form which is available on the YourSay Bathurst website.

The Bathurst Writers & Readers Festival returns to BMEC on Friday 20 – Sunday 22 May with both live stream and local events.

Council will consider calling for Expressions of Interest from passenger airlines to continue an air service between Bathurst and Sydney at an ordinary meeting on Wednesday, 18 May.

Mayor Robert Taylor said Rex Express has been the Regular Public Transport (RPT) air service provider between Bathurst and Sydney and has provided a high service to the community for many years.

“Unfortunately, Covid has severely impacted on passenger numbers on this route, as it has most routes throughout Australia,” he said.

“Rex has indicated it is unlikely to continue the service once the Federal Government financial support to regional carriers ends.”

Interest remains from business, health and tourist sectors for a return to a daily RPT service and is perceived as necessary for Bathurst to identify as an important regional destination.

Council invites residents to acknowledge the anniversary of the proclamation by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1815 of Bathurst as a settlement on Sunday 8 May. The ceremony is at 10am at the Flag Staff acknowledging the 2022 Living Legends, followed by a commemoration of past Bathurstians at 11am at the Pillars of Bathurst.

Council has a new service in place which sends SMS reminders to dog and cat owners to register their pets. All cats and dogs, other than exempt cats and dogs, must be registered by six months of age.

The registration fee is a once-only payment, which covers the cat or dog for its Registering your pet and updating the contact details, if required, is the best way to ensure your pet is returned to you if they ever become lost.

Pet owners are encouraged to register their cat or dog online at www.petregistry.nsw.gov.au, which is a database of registered cats or dogs that live in NSW.

Community tree planting day

Don your gardening gloves, embrace the outdoors and lend us a hand to help plant native plants along Jordan Creek in Links Place Drainage Reserve this Sunday 24 April.

Starting at 10am, adults and kids alike can assist in planting native trees, shrubs and grasses that once mature will provide important habitat for local wildlife, and improve the health and function of this important urban waterway. Council will also have a free BBQ lunch afterwards.

Vandalism of Environmental Rehabilitation Works at Jaques Park

Council is calling on the community to report acts of vandalism against environmental rehabilitation works undertaken along Hawthornden Creek within Jaques Park in South Bathurst.

In what can only be described as environmental vandalism following recent community and schools planting days, young seedlings, tree guards and hardwood stakes continue to be pulled from the ground and thrown into the creek or stolen, and some of the remaining planting holes have been replanted with exotic species.

Manager Recreation Mark Kimbel said the vandalism has been a disappointing setback for Council and community volunteers, as they have been working hard to rehabilitate the riparian vegetation zone along Hawthornden Creek at Jaques Park having achieved a major transformation from what was once a highly degraded site dominated by invasive riparian weeds, and devoid of natural vegetation.

“Over the last twelve years, significant environmental rehabilitation works along Hawthornden Creek have been undertaken including activities in the section of the creek transecting Jaques Park,” he said.

“The works have involved the removal of weed species such as Poplars, Willow, and Blackberry.”

Community volunteers and as well as students from South Bathurst Public School have been heavily involved in this ongoing project since 2010, helping to revegetate Hawthornden Creek through scheduled community and school tree planting days whilst also learning about the benefits of habitat rehabilitation.

A range of native trees, shrubs, rushes and grasses have been planted along the creek including River Sheoak, Yellow Box, Silver Wattle, River Bottlebrush, Swamp Tea-tree and native grasses. The plant species that have been chosen are local to the Bathurst region and once mature will provide habitat for wildlife and stabilise the bank to reduce erosion.

Council has extended the deadline for Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the Redevelopment of the former TAFE Precinct to 3 May. This extension is in consideration of Covid disruptions experienced in the EOI timeframe to date and is to ensure high-quality proposals are received.

Council invites local community organisations to apply for funding from the 2022 ClubGRANTS Scheme. Applications close at 4pm on Friday 22 April.

Council is now inviting applications for small grants to assist local property owners and community groups to restore, repair, promote and interpret the region’s heritage.

• The Bathurst Region Local Heritage Fund provides small grants for the repair and maintenance of older buildings in the region. The program is supported by the NSW Heritage Branch of the Office of Environment and Heritage.
  
  
• The Bathurst CBD Main Street Improvement Fund provides small grants to assist property owners and tenants to activate, improve, repair and maintain buildings within the central business district.
  
  
• The Bathurst Region Interpretation Fund provides small grants for the preparation of Conservation Management

Plans, historic publications and interpretation projects to promote and interpret the region’s history.

Applications for funding must be made on the application form which is available on the YourSay Bathurst website.

The community JP Desk in the Bathurst City Centre is open to assist clients face to face who need JP services.

The service is available at Bathurst City Centre on Tuesday afternoon (3.30pm to 6pm) Thursday evenings (5pm to 7pm) and Saturday mornings (9am to 12 noon).

Community Tree Planting Day

Where: Baillie Street Reserve (Evans Bridge) Macquarie Wambuul River
When:10 am, Sunday 10 April

Adults and kids can assist in planting native trees, shrubs and grasses that will provide important habitat for local wildlife, and improve the health and function of this much loved river. There will be a free barbecue lunch afterwards.

No experience is needed and all plants and equipment are provided. To ensure safe hygiene practices we ask that you please bring along your own gardening gloves. The event will go ahead in light rain. For further information and/or to register please contact Bill Josh on 0407 256 791.

Dino-store exhibit

The Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum has a new display featuring three young dinosaurs that you can pat and interact with. The display features a Stegosaurus, Utahraptor and a Monolophosaurus and is staged as a pet shop where you can imagine what it would be like to have a dinosaur as a pet.

Chase the Rainbow

Chase the Rainbow is a free family friendly run/walk at Morse Park on Sunday, 10 April from 9:30am - 1.00pm to celebrate Youth Week. The event is less about running speed and more about having fun. Participants are doused in different colours while passing colour stations throughout the designated course.

There will be a Lions Club sausage sizzle, food and coffee vans, and live music.

Regional Development Australia and Council are conducting two grant writing workshops on Tuesday, 17 May to assist community groups and businesses apply for the many grants offered by all levels of Government. Autumn Colours

The Autumn Colours program will incorporate the Bathurst Heritage Trades Trail and Heritage Week culminating with Proclamation Day.

The Bathurst Heritage Trades Trail is on 9-10 April with over 100 artisans exhibiting at the Bathurst Showground and Agricultural Research Station with a series of workshops and demonstrations.

The Heritage Week activities have been expanded with tours and events scheduled from Saturday 30 April including tours of the TAFE building, Uniting Church, St Stephen’s and Keppel Street and concluding with Proclamation Day on Sunday 8 May.

Tickets for all tours and for the Heritage Trades Trail can be booked at bathurstregion.com.au.

Council has a new service in place which sends SMS reminders to dog and cat owners to register their pets.

Director Environmental, Planning and Building Services Neil Southorn said all cats and dogs, other than exempt cats and dogs, must be registered by six months of age.

"The registration fee is a once-only payment, which covers the cat or dog for its lifetime in NSW, regardless of any changes in ownership,” he said.

"Registering your pet and updating the contact details, if required, is the best way to ensure your pet is returned to you if they ever become lost,".

Pet owners are encouraged to have their cat or dog desexed before registering it. Having the pet desexed prior to registration helps to reduce straying, fighting and aggression and antisocial behaviour, such as spraying to mark territory. It also helps to reduce the number of unwanted pets born each year.

Pet owners are encouraged to register their cat or dog online at www.petregistry.nsw.gov.au, which is a database of registered cats or dogs that live in NSW.

Transport for NSW Tree Removal

Transport for NSW will remove poplar trees on the southern side of the Great Western Highway from 7.00pm to 12.00am on Wednesday, 6 April. The work is being carried out to allow for utility relocation. There will be some temporary changes to traffic during this time.
