Project Update 24 January 2020

Contractors have been on site at the Mitre Suttor Lambert Street roundabout since Monday 20 January 2020 and median strips in both Suttor and Mitre Streets have been removed. Temporary pavement works have been completed to allow for traffic to be redirected around works as they progress.

The construction of the roundabout is a complicated project with the large number of underground services (water, power, gas, telecommunications) in the area. The service relocation works are complex and have required substantial planning and confirmation on site before physical works started to ensure the risk of damaging any of these services is mitigated.

The next stage of work is the watermain relocation. This will be done in stages, along with trenching and reinstatement works as other utilities are also relocated.

On completion of service relocation works, pavement works will commence on the new tennis court carpark, the Suttor Street approach and the northern side of Mitre Street.

As these works are undertaken, access to the carpark next to the shops will be restricted. The carpark next to the Scout Hall will remain open for use.

The local shops will be open throughout the works. Pedestrian access will be available at all times.

Council is asking that motorists allow for possible delays when travelling through the intersection. There will be changes to traffic, parking, school drop off and bus zones. The intersection will be under traffic control and the speed limit will be reduced to 40km per hour.

For those returning back to school, particularly at Assumption, it is important to take notice of the changes to parking areas and to allow for additional time for the school drop off and pick up while the works continue.

The project will take up to 9 months to complete and any wet weather may push back the completion date.

Two radio campaigns are running on local radio. The first, to advise motorists of changed traffic and parking in the area; the second, to remind the community that local businesses adjacent to the intersection remain open.
