  • International Women’s Day

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Email this link

    MEDIA RELEASE 21 February 2023

A joyous, community celebration has been planned in the Bathurst City Hall and Courtyard on Wednesday March 8 from 11am - 2pm and everyone is welcome to attend.

Mayor Robert Taylor said the event has been observed since the early 1900s - a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialised world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies.

“The significance of International Women's Day is increasing each year as is the respect, appreciation and care for women in our community and society,” he said.

Councillors Kirralee Burke and Margaret Hogan have been given the opportunity to create this year’s International Women’s Day event for Bathurst Regional Council.

“Our aim is to provide an opportunity for the wider community to connect and celebrate International Women’s Day at a relaxed and happy event. So far, we’ve had enthusiastic support from all sorts of groups and businesses wanting to be involved and if any other groups would like to take part, please don't hesitate to get in touch in with us,” said Councillor Burke.

This year’s theme is “Embrace Equity” which is something quite different to equality.

EQUALITY means each individual or group of people is given the same resources or opportunities.

EQUITY recognises that each person has different circumstances, and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome.

“Our guest speaker this year is Julie Fairley, the Client Innovation Centre Leader at IBM in Bathurst. Julie’s story is incredibly inspiring. She has overcome adversity and made her way to a top role with IBM,” said Councillor Hogan.

Smith and Jones and Harriet Fahey will be performing. Local photographer Julia Strang and members of the Youth Council will be running a free photo booth. The CWA are taking care of the free sausage sizzle and purple cupcakes, there’ll be a free ice cream cart from Annies and good coffee on hand. All the businesses and community groups who have so far agreed to take part will be providing interactive art and craft activities.

“It was very important to both Kirralee and myself that we built an event that gave people a genuine opportunity to connect. If people come along and leave feeling a little more connected and uplifted that’ll be a great outcome.” said Councillor Hogan.

“We are extremely grateful to Charles Sturt University for their support and to all the businesses and community groups who have embraced the event.”

    MEDIA RELEASE 27 January 2023

Council’s Small Animal Pound (located at 58 Vale Road, South Bathurst) is increasing the appointment times available to view an animal for adoption or to release impounded animals.

Customers can now make an appointment between 10am and 12 midday, or 1pm and 3pm on weekdays.

Mayor of Bathurst Cr Robert Taylor said increasing the hours available for members of the public to visit the pound will allow more prospective pet owners to meet their new best friend.

“We will be able to provide a better experience for those coming to the pound, where we can assist with paperwork and provide time for community members to bond with their new pet.”

“We look forward to the new Bathurst Animal Rehoming Centre being completed coming months where we will have a dedicated rehoming pavilion where community members will be able to spend time with their new furry friend. But until then, we are able to provide additional time slots for adoptions at the pound and rehome the cats and dogs we are currently caring for as they wait for their forever home,” Cr Taylor said.

    MEDIA RELEASE 24 January 2023

Council is looking for community feedback for future plans for the Ralph Cameron Oval play space upgrade concept design.

The playground at the oval is nearing the end of its useful life and the play elements only cater for a limited age group and are not inclusive.

Mayor of Bathurst Councillor Robert Taylor said following numerous requests from the Raglan community in recent years calling for improved play spaces catering for a range of age groups, Council has prepared concept designs that will support future grant funding applications for a play space upgrade.

“Council has put together the Ralph Cameron Oval Play Space upgrade concept design/ It is an indicative plan outlining elements that would meet inclusivity requirements and be suitable for a variety of age groups.”

“Council is committed to providing inclusive play spaces that cater for people of all ages and abilities. The final play space design will be limited to the available budget, however it is proposed that the following key elements would feature in a final design

    • Picnic shelter and tables
    • Shake provisions including tree planting or shade structures
    • Inclusive play equipment with wheelchair accessibility
    • Multi-purpose sports court
    • Accessible path access from Raglan Hall carpark
    • Multi-purpose skate, scooter track
    • Park seating
    • Various play equipment that meet play equipment standards and age groups,” Cr Taylor said.

Council has received grant funding for the installation of a multi-purpose sports court. The court construction will form stage one of the proposed larger upgrade of the entire playground. Work on the court is scheduled to start later this month.

In order to assist Council in its forward planning process and developing the design of the Ralph Cameron Oval play space upgrade concept, Council is seeking input from the community on the indicative plans that have been developed.
