Council is calling for expressions of interest for the next term of the Bathurst region Tourism Reference Group. The 12-member committee was first formed in late 2015 to help guide the implementation of the recently adopted Destination Management Plan (DMP) and provide expert tourism industry advice and guidance to Council.
Mayor Bobby Bourke said the former committee had been an integral part of shaping the direction of tourism in the Bathurst region.
“The 2015 DMP provided a five-year plan to guide the development of the Bathurst region as a premier tourism destination and the members of the Tourism Reference Group appointed in 2015 have worked hard to help shape the successful tourism industry of the region today,” he said.
“The term of the current group expires at the end of this year and with the simultaneous adoption of a new DMP, it is an exciting time for tourism in our region. Council is committed to supporting the further growth of the industry which is already worth over $230 million annually to our economy. I encourage suitably qualified community members to lodge their expressions of interest and assist Council in growing the destination”.
Council is looking for individuals with a range of skills and experience working within the visitor economy to represent the diverse industry sectors on the Tourism Reference Group.
Membership positions on the group are voluntary and are for a period of two years, or as vacancies arise.
Further information and application forms for membership of the next term of the Tourism Reference Group are available at www.bathurst.nsw.gov.au Applications close on 6 December 2019.

Council will hold two drop-in information sessions on the construction of the roundabout at Suttor, Mitre and Lambert Streets on Thursday, 14 November.
The first drop-in session will be at the Upstairs Startup Hub from 12.00pm to 2.00pm and the second session will be at the Scout Hall in West Bathurst from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.
Mayor Bobby Bourke said Council staff will be available at the each of the sessions to answer any questions, queries or concerns that residents may have.
“I encourage people to pop by anytime during one of the sessions to learn how the construction of the roundabout may impact them,” he said.
The roundabout is being built in response to community concerns and feedback about safety issues at the intersection. The construction of the roundabout is a complex and lengthy project due to the design of the intersection and the number of underground services in the area. It is envisaged the project will take approximately nine months to complete.
The project will be conducted in stages. The first of which are outlined below:
Stage one
Carpark construction adjacent to the shops and water main works at the rear of the shops. The intersection will remain open under traffic control. Access between Coral Way and Suttor Street will be closed for the duration of the project.
Stage two
Water main works at the intersection. The intersection will remain open under traffic control. Stages one and two are expected to take approximately eight weeks.
Stage three
Road realignment and service relocation. Suttor and Mitre Streets will remain open under traffic control. Lambert Street will be fully closed to traffic. This is scheduled to occur during school holidays to minimise impact to traffic. This stage is expected to take approximately four weeks.
As the project progresses, the subsequent stages will be detailed on the Bathurst YourSay website. Regular project updates will be published on the YourSay Bathurst website where you can also subscribe to receive a newsletter with the latest information.

Council is continuing work with the NSW Government to discuss a range of strategies to secure water for the Bathurst region.
Mayor of Bathurst Bobby Bourke and senior Council staff met with Minister for Water Melinda Pavey, local MP Paul Toole and other representatives from the NSW Government including Water Coordinator James McTavish and Deputy Secretary for Water Jim Bentley in Sydney today. The delegation also met with Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Deputy Premier John Barilaro.
This was the second meeting with NSW Government representatives this month to progress discussions on projects that will secure the region’s water supply such as the Winburndale Pipeline and stormwater harvesting. Council is seeking a further $20 million for these projects, which are almost ready to commence.
Mayor Bobby Bourke said the meeting was extremely positive and Council’s proposals were well received.
“These discussions bring us another step closer to securing the region’s water and I am certain that our strategies and proposals will be given suitable consideration,” he said.
“I am looking forward to working with the NSW Government and learning the outcome of our request for assistance soon”.
Minister for Water Melinda Pavey congratulated Council for the leadership on water saving measures and was pleased with the progress being made on Bathurst’s long term water security.
“Bathurst Regional Council understands we are facing the worst drought on record and must work together to find solutions to extend supply and guarantee jobs. The NSW Government and water agencies, together with Bathurst Regional Council, are working collaboratively to address and combat their regional water concerns,” she said.
The NSW Government has previously pledged $2 million for Council to investigate medium to long term solutions and strategies to secure the region’s water supply such as stormwater harvesting and the Winburndale pipeline were discussed at length in today’s meeting.
Council has also received $2.25 million from the Safe and Secure Water Program for the strengthening of Winburndale Dam wall, with construction work already commenced.

From students to managers, children to grandparents, in urban, suburban and rural locations, a passion for birds is a pastime that has long connected Australians.
From 21-27 October 2019, Council is asking the local community to join thousands of other Aussies in helping BirdLife Australia count the birds that share their backyards, farms, rivers and parks urban, rural and regional backyards as part of the annual Aussie Backyard Bird Count, being held during National Bird Week.
Using the specially designed app, which helps people identify local birds based on size, colour and location, the aim is to count more than 12,000 local birds in seven days. The count, which has risen in popularity over the past five years to become one of Australia’s largest citizen science projects, gives Australians a chance to take a break from their busy everyday lives and spend 20 minutes in their favourite outdoor spaces.Support for the bird count came from Bathurst Mayor Bobby Bourke.“In 2018, locals recorded 162 species, with Aussie favourites like Magpies, Galahs, and Rosellas seen all across the region”, he said.“We hope to count even more local birds this year”.Leading the diverse range of counters across the country will be BirdLife Australia’s Chief Bird Nerd, Sean Dooley, who says BirdLife Australia has noticed a broader range of people contributing to the count since it began.“The Aussie Backyard Bird Count continues to attract a diverse range of counters from young families teaching their children about nature to retirees using birds as a great excuse to explore Australia,” Mr. Dooley said.Council will also be hosting a guided bird walk at Mount Panorama with local expert Tiffany Mason on Sunday, 27 October at 8.00am.The updated Aussie Bird Count app allows everyone to take part anywhere—not just backyards, but in local parks, botanical gardens, schoolyards or beaches—wherever you might see birds. The national total will be updated in real time, and the app allows you to see which species are being seen in your local area.People are encouraged to post photos and messages via social media via hashtags #AussieBirdCount and #bathurstbirdcount. For more information, to register or download the app visit www.aussiebirdcount.org.auTo RSVP for the guided bird walk visit www.facebook/sustainablebathurst, or call Environmental Officer, Joel Little, on 6333 6217.ENDSMedia contact: Media Officer -
