Trial pedestrian crossing to be built on George Street

MEDIA RELEASE 20 April 2023

A trial pedestrian crossing will be built in George Street and initial site works are now underway.

Mayor Robert Taylor said the trial pedestrian crossing is part of Streets as Shared Spaces Program – Round 2 to improve pedestrian access across George Street at the Machattie Lane location.

“Raised pedestrian crossings at mid-block locations were recommended in the Bathurst Town Centre Master Plan” he said.

“Works will occur in three stages over an estimated two-week period,”.

Stage one is estimated to take 1 – 2 days and involve partial demolition and reprofiling of the existing concrete pedestrian ramps on either side of George Street. George Street will be open during this time but under traffic control.

Stage two will involve placing asphalt to form the raised crossing and stage three will involve placement of line marking and signage for the pedestrian crossing. Temporary closures of George Street will be in place during these stages. The crossing/refuge will be closed to pedestrians for the duration of works.

Council has received funding under the NSW Government’s Streets as Shared Spaces Program –

Round 2 (SaSS Rd 2) to trial changes to improve public spaces and enhance pedestrian access and the sharing of public spaces within the Bathurst Central Business District.
