What is a Disability Inclusion Action Plan?

A Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) plays an important role in fully including people with disability in our community. The Plan:

    • Provides a public statement of the commitment to accessibility and inclusion promoting equal rights for all
    • Communicates Council’s vision for access and inclusion to Council staff, stakeholders and our broader community
    • Outlines specific actions Council will deliver to increase access to mainstream services, information and public spaces for people with disability
    • Puts the principles outlined in the NSW Disability Inclusion Act 2014 and the NSW Disability Inclusion Plan into practice
    • Is a vehicle to engage with the internal and external disability community to bring to life real solutions for better access and inclusion
    • Includes assessment and monitoring of progress of all actions in the Plan

Why is Council developing a new Disability Inclusion Action Plan?

Under the Disability Inclusion Act 2014, all Councils are required to have a plan in place to show what they will do to make sure that mainstream services, information and public spaces are available to people with disability. Council’s current Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2022-2027 is concluding, so we are developing a new plan to replace it.

What does ‘accessible’ and ‘inclusive’ mean?

‘Accessible’ means that something is easy to access for everyone. It can mean easy to get to or get around, or easy to use or understand.

‘Inclusive’ means that everyone can be involved, or everyone is included.

If a place or event is accessible and inclusive, then it is made to be easy for everyone to use and everyone is invited to get involved.
